Two Child Nursing students from Huddersfield have been named as finalists in the Student Nurse of the Year: Child category at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2013.

Held annually, the Student Nursing Times Awards recognises the achievements of outstanding student nurses from across the country, as well as the institutions contributing to teaching excellence in the field. As a result of nominations by Senior Lecturer Karen Currell, Gail Jones and Eleanor Gurnett from the Nursing (Child) BSc(Hons) course at Huddersfield have been shortlisted as finalists this year.

‘I think it’s really important to recognise nursing achievements in a positive way, especially at the moment in light of recent reports in to the standards within the NHS, and it’s a great opportunity to shine a light on excellent nursing students within our University’, Karen commented. ‘I nominated them because they are both exceptional'.

'They seize every opportunity and are a real inspiration to anyone who wants to be outstanding at what they do'.

Gail and Eleanor acknowledged the recognition with pride, describing it as ‘a real achievement’ to be named as finalists. ‘We’re such a small group, it’s like a family’ said Eleanor of her experience on the course; ‘the lecturers are amazing and we all help each other out, it’s very collaborative’.

Both Eleanor and Gail came to child nursing as mature students, having previously pursued other careers. ‘I’m finally doing what I’ve always wanted to do. I love it, it is absolutely the best thing I ever did’ said Gail, with Eleanor adding ‘I had always wanted to work with children and am so glad I took the opportunity’.

A new career in nursing now awaits the finalists, with both expressing an interest in neonatal extensive care; ‘I’ve enjoyed every placement so much, I just want to get out there!’ commented Eleanor.

Having attended an interview with the judging panel, Eleanor and Gail now face a nail-biting wait to find out who will be named the winner. The winners will be announced during an awards lunch, taking place on Wednesday 1 May at the Grange Hotel in London.
