‌The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre Huddersfield is part financed through the European Regional Development Fund and Kirklees Council.) opened in January 2013 and offers office and laboratory space to high tech, high growth businesses.

The £12m Centre (3M BIC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University that will act as a one-stop-shop for businesses to experience dynamic growth through its bespoke business model and will facilitate business to business and business to HE collaborations. The Centre is named after University of Huddersfield alumnus Sir George Buckley, who earlier this year retired from 3M where he had been Chairman, President and CEO since 2005. 3M, already well known to businesses within the healthcare sector, entered into a long-term strategic partnership with the University, and is generally acknowledged to be one of the most innovative companies in the world.

The Centre provides office accommodation ranging from hot-desks or long term individual desk spaces to offices with a capacity of 12, as well as laboratory and workshop space and around 90 companies are expected to take up tenancy.

Running through the heart of the building is the aptly named Innovation Avenue, providing high-tech facilities ranging from fine surface measurement and microscopy to high performance computing and 3D printing equipment for product and prototype design. The Centre expects such facilities to be of particular interest to the healthcare sector and all members of the Skin Interface Science group will find a high quality business focussed venue for discussing and carrying out potential collaborations.

The Centre also boasts a wide range of meeting rooms and conference facilities available for hire to suit any event requirement. All spaces are furnished with state-of-the art audio visual equipment, and range from small spaces suitable for one-to-one meetings to full presentation and exhibition suites with a capacity of 100.

The 3MBIC also offers a wide range of catering to suit every budget and dietary requirement upon request.

In addition the 3MBIC is keen to invite all businesses to become members of the 3M BIC Network. Membership gives preferential rates of access to the facilities as mentioned above.
