The University’s Chancellor attends alumni event in China

THE Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, HRH The Duke of York, KG, was the guest of honour at the University’s recent Alumni and Partner Organisation event held in Beijing, China.

The event was attended by almost 200 guests with the audience including many distinguished alumni as well as key university and strategic business partners.

Chi Zhang (top) and Dr Zhong Hua Professor David Taylor, Pro Vice-Chancellor for International, gave the opening address welcoming the guests and highlighting recent major developments at the University.  These included the University’s latest innovations on campus, highlighted by the recent opening of the new £28m Oastler Building by His Royal Highness, and that the University this year entered The Times Top 200 Young Universities list for the first time.

His Royal Highness then presented a number of awards to commemorate five years of successful operation by the University’s China Office.  The prizes and award winners were:

The Outstanding Alumni (Enterprise), which went to Chi Zhang, who has built up his own Chinese fashion brand with outlets in Milan, Paris, London and Beijing; (pictured left top)

  • The Outstanding Alumni (Education), which went to Dr Zhong Hua, who holds both a senior position in the Ministry of Education and is Vice-President of Beijing USA College; (pictured left bottom)
  • The Best Partner Awards were awarded to Metro Education, Delter Education Group and Ultrawise, all long-standing strategic business partners of the University in China;
  • And the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Award was collected by the University’s China Office for their work in supporting Anqing Primary School in Guizhou Province.  The University and its China Office support a number of children at the school and UK students from Huddersfield made a recent visit to help out at the school.

The Duke of York gave a closing address highlighting his Pitch@Palace entrepreneur project in Beijing and drew parallels with the University’s enterprise and innovation agenda.  His Royal Highness then took time to chat informally with the prize-winners and guests.
