Changes to the Disabled Students’ Allowance

implications and opportunities for teaching and learning

TALI This session led by Jo Mitchell, Senior Disability Officer, Student Services, will address the changes to the disabled students’ allowance (DSA) and the potential impact this will have on teaching and learning for disabled students. The session will include a presentation on the changes. Following a short break, there will be an opportunity for participants to discuss the following:

  • The impact of the changes on their areas of work
  • How staff can address the impact to maintain student engagement and achievement
  • Is there a potential for changing/developing current teaching and learning practice to address the needs of disabled and non-disabled students alike?

Following the session participants will be able to:

  • Understand the DSA changes and the potential impact on their area of work
  • Have the information necessary to start to address the impact of the changes in their area of work

The session takes place on Wednesday 29 June 2016 between 9.30am to 11.30am.

Games for Teaching and Learning

Cheryl Reynolds and Andrew Walsh explore the potential benefits, challenges and caveats of gamification. This includes a brief account of the use of gamification to teach Bourdieu's field theory to trainee teachers. Participants will be able to devise a prototype design for a game to use in their own teaching practice.

The session takes place on Thursday 30 June 2016 from 9.30am to 12.00noon.

Using Lego for Learning

Andrew Walsh, Academic Librarian, National and University Teaching Fellow, will introduce the idea of using Lego to facilitate learning through the use of metaphor and little plastic bricks.

Following the session participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of Lego Serious Play
  • Use Lego to represent concepts and feelings
  • Articulate how they will apply these ideas to their own practice

This session takes place on Tuesday 5 July 2016 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.
