3 min thesis awards

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition 2016 was held on Tuesday 14 June at the University where six finalists delivered their presentations to a panel of judges and a mix of academic and non-academic audience.

This competition developed by the University of Queensland, Australia requires doctoral students to present their thesis in just three minutes. The presentation should cover the candidate’s research topic, its originality and its significance. Candidates can only use one PowerPoint slide with no additional animation or props to translate complex ideas in a simple way. The three minute time limit is very strict and if the candidate goes over even by a second they will be disqualified. Rising up to this challenge all of our finalists gave a very engaging presentation.

We are delighted to announce the Huddersfield 3MT 2016 Winner - Jim Scotson from the School of Applied Sciences. His thesis is on ‘Understanding Oligonucleotide Synthesis’. The Runner-up was Leanne Atkin from the School of Human and Health Sciences and her thesis is on ‘Vibration therapy for treatment of intermittent claudication’.  In addition to the decision of a judging panel there is also an audience vote for the best presentation. This year the audience agreed with the judges and the Huddersfield 3MT 2016 People’s Choice Award was also won by Jim Scotson.

Jim’s winning entry at Huddersfield 3MT 2016 will now be put forward to compete at the Vitae 3MT 2016 UK National Semi-final competition.

The full report and photos from this year’s competition is available on the Huddersfield 3MT 2016 website.
