The University contests ten other universities for The Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship

THE University of Huddersfield aims to ensure that enterprise education is a component of all its courses and this goal has helped secure a place on the shortlist for a prestigious new award.

The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are now in their 14th year and for 2015 there is a new category – The Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship.  Its stated aim is “to inspire and measure university commitment to entrepreneurship”.

The ten finalists include the University of Huddersfield, whose past honours include the title Entrepreneurial University of the Year.

To earn a place on the shortlist for the new award, Head of Enterprise Dr Kelly Smith wrote a detailed submission that described the University’s commitment to student entrepreneurship and the layers of support provided to student enterprise.

“We aim to be the first university to embed enterprise education into all courses we offer,” states the award submission.  It adds that:

Enterprise and entrepreneurship are seen throughout the student experience, with an extensive range of formal and informal opportunities. We provide whole programmes of study, embed enterprise in subjects across campus and involve business in course design, live projects and assessment. With strong encouragement and support from the Vice-Chancellor and senior management, ‘Enterprising Students’ is a core element of our teaching and learning strategy.

His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG, – who has lent his backing to the new award – is deeply engaged in support for enterprise education.  He was installed this year as Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, which is home to The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre and which hosts annual awards for the best examples of student enterprise at Yorkshire universities.

Philip Clegg, who is the University of Huddersfield’s Head of Student and Graduate Business Start-ups, pointed out that four of the finalists for The Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship at the Lloyds Bank awards were Yorkshire universities – evidence of the impact made in the region by The Duke’s agenda.

The 2015 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are announced at a ceremony taking place on 10 November at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
