Successful live brief for first year Multimedia and Web students

First year Multimedia and Web students have been working hard on a live brief to build the Huddersfield Croquet Club their first website.

The Club wanted the site to fit in with its current mature membership as well as appealing to a new younger market and to be compatible with both web and mobile devices. The brief was to have a web presence that informs the public about croquet, the Club itself and provide communication for the membership regarding club affairs. It needed to include an easy way for members to keep in touch, access news, forums and a calendar of events as well as providing ecommerce functionality for users to become members.

Malcolm Daines from Huddersfield Croquet Club visited the University to meet the 32 students, who competed against each other, to present prizes for the new website design.

First year students at Huddersfield are taught basic website creation; HTML, CSS, JavaScript and visual design. In addition to this, the Digital Media Project module provided learning on the use of the WordPress Content Management System, allowing students to create a stunningly beautiful website with rich functionality that has commercial value.

This is the first year that Dr Michael O’Grady, Course Leader for Multimedia and Web courses has had first year students asking for advice on freelance work. The live brief with real clients has given them the opportunity to visualise their future career and make money, by putting their learning in to action.

The Club have chosen their preferred website and Malcolm Daines from the Club presented the winning team with iTunes vouchers, congratulations to winners Daniel Park and Xiaozhou Song.  The runner-up team of Beth Stanley and Eva Glover received a Highly Commended award. The whole class has been invited down to the Croquet Club’s, Leeds Road ground to have a ‘Get to know Croquet’ day following their hard work.

The students on the winning team will get the opportunity to make their design live and to train club members on how to use the new site and keep it updated, something that will be beneficial to both the Club and the students. Dr Michael O’Grady is keen to introduce live projects throughout the course as there are plenty of opportunities for freelance work, industrial placements and graduate jobs for those with this type of experience.
