Urban Congress

Professor Adrian Pitts was a participant in the Academy of Urbanism Congress held in Birmingham at the beginning of June. The focus of the event was on 'Health, Happiness and Wellbeing' and included a particularly inspiring presentation on the 'Happy City' by the author and self-styled urban experimentalist, Charles Montgomery from Vancouver. In addition to talks and workshops based on the congress themes there were also walking tours of recent developments around Birmingham City Centre, a visit to Bournville Village, and a canal tour. The main venue for the event was adjacent to Birmingham's recently built award winning library (see photo). Adrian was also able to use the congress to promote the forthcoming Regional Urbanism Conference to be held in Huddersfield in February 2016.

Adrian Pitts has been asked to be the guest Editor of a special Issue of Sustainability Journal on Passive House Development and High Energy Efficiency Sustainable Buildings. This is particualrly appropriate given the expertise within the Research Centre of Derrie O'Sullivan in this topic area and also that of local Huddersfield firm The Green Building Store, with which there are many existing links. Professor Wolfgang Feist, Director of the Passivehaus Institut is expected to make a leading contribution.
