Wettest January since 2008

Snow scene January experienced around average temperatures; however, it significantly wetter and windier than normal with just three days of the month having no rainfall.  Friday 9th was eventful being the warmest, wettest and windiest day of the month.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.

The monthly mean temperature was 4.95˚C compared to the average figure for January of 5.14 ˚C.  The warmest day of the month was Friday 9th with an average temperature of 11.9˚C (average 10.3˚C) making it the third warmest January day since our records began.  The highest temperature of 14.3˚C was also recorded on the 9th; it was the 3rd highest temperature recorded for January since our records began.  The coldest day of the month was Wednesday 21st with an average temperature of 1.0˚C.  The lowest minimum temperature of -2.2˚C was recorded on Saturday 3rd.  The temperature fell below zero on six days of the month.

It was the wettest January since 2008.  A total of 120.2mm of rain was recorded during the month compared to the average figure for January of 94.5mm.  The wettest day of the month was Friday 9th with 13.6mm of rainfall (11.3% of the month’s total).  Only three days of the month escaped rainfall with no significant dry spells.

Snow scene The mean wind speed for the month was a substantial 17.06km/hr, making it the windiest month since December 2011 and the third windiest month since the most recent weather station was installed in 2005.  The highest mean wind speed was 50.4km/hr recorded on Friday 9th.  The highest gust of wind for the whole month, was 136.44km/hr, the second equal highest recorded for January and the 3rd equal highest for all months since 2005!

The prevailing wind direction for the month was south west.
