Excellent NSS results for the University of Huddersfield

THE University of Huddersfield has cemented its reputation as one of the best in the UK for providing assessment and feedback to students. This is one of the key findings of a major survey which also shows that overall student satisfaction at Huddersfield has continued to grow and is significantly higher than the national average.

Six subject areas registered 100 per cent student satisfaction rates, and a large number of other Huddersfield courses scored highly or showed big improvements since 2014.

The National Student Survey (NSS) is a high-profile census of nearly half a million final-year students across the UK.  Commissioned by Government bodies that include the Higher Education Funding Council for England, it is carried out by polling organisation Ipsos MORI.

The NSS runs across all publicly-funded Higher Education Institutions in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and has taken place annually since 2005. The goal is to give students a powerful voice as they respond to 23 questions relating to various aspects of their course and university.Tim Thornton

The Overall Satisfaction rate at the University of Huddersfield has climbed to 88 per cent – three points higher than last year and two points above the national average.

One of the crucial NSS categories is for assessment and feedback. In 2015, the University of Huddersfield is in the top ten among the larger mainstream English universities, and four points higher than the national average in this category.  In addition, students registered an 87 per cent approval rate for the teaching on their courses.

‌In fact at Huddersfield some subject areas achieved 100 per cent overall satisfaction rates – these were Politics, Sociology, Teacher Training, Initial Teacher Training, Academic Studies in Education and Technology.

‌Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Tim Thornton (pictured right) said:  “Here at Huddersfield we are committed to putting our students’ academic experience at the heart of everything we do.  I am delighted that our students have given us such excellent scores in this year’s survey, demonstrating that they really do feel the benefit of that commitment.”
